The Story Behind the Artwork

Máy May

I never had the chance to meet my grandmother. She passed away before I was born.

This old sewing machine was once part of my aunt’s life. My mother told me that it may have been bought with a little money my grandmother left behind. When I brought it to my studio, I began to see it as a quiet connection between generations.

The machine holds pieces of my aunt’s youth and my own childhood. It reminds me of my grandmother through the stories I grew up hearing, and of the women whose lives quietly shaped mine.

The day I brought it home, a brown butterfly flew in. I chose to believe it was my grandmother coming home to help me weave those memories again.

This artwork is a small tribute to my grandmother, my aunt, and the memories that have shaped who I am today.
