The Story Behind the Artwork
Gam Voc Viet
“Vietnam’s beautiful landscape becomes even more beautiful through the hands of our women, young and old, who weave and embroider its beauty.”
Inspired by President Ho Chi Minh’s words in a 1952 letter to Vietnamese women on the occasion of the anniversary of the Trung Sisters’ uprising and International Women’s Day, this artwork celebrates the role of Vietnamese women in shaping the country’s cultural heritage.
At the heart of the design is a traditional silk loom, symbolizing the skill, creativity, and dedication of Vietnamese women. Like threads woven together on a loom, their hands have quietly created beauty from the simplest things in everyday life, while nurturing families, preserving traditions, and contributing to the growth of society.
The stork represents the grace and aspirations of Vietnamese women, reflecting their strength both within the family and beyond it. The lotus, blooming against the silk background, symbolizes noble beauty and an unwavering spirit. Like the lotus rising from the mud, Vietnamese women continue to preserve their dignity and strength through hardship, carrying their values forward with resilience and grace.
Every line and color of Gam Voc Viet expresses là lụa là’s gratitude and admiration for Vietnamese women, whose hands and hearts have helped weave the rich cultural fabric of the nation, generation after generation.
